Solududhkunda Pushes for Refuelling Hub at Phaplu Airport

March 5th 2020

The Solududhkunda Municipality in the Solukhumbu district has urged Nepal Oil Corporation to set up a petrol pump at the airport in Phaplu for the betterment of tourism. Erratic weather in the Khumbu region oversees the cancellation of flights, which usually messes up the itinerary of tourists and their support staff. The local body hopes the new facility will help address this concern.

According to Mayor Namgel Jangbu Sherpa, unreliable flight schedules induced by inclement weather become great hurdles in the mobility of travelers as well as tourism-related businesses. He made it clear that a refueling station shall bring down these irritations since planes between Ramechhap and Lukla do experience this kind of problem.

The municipality is actively working with Nepal Oil Corporation and airline companies to develop the refueling station, and flights are currently operating from Ramechhap to Lukla. According to officials, this move will increase air connection and facilitate travel for both residents and visitors.

There are a number of nearby airports, but Phaplu Airport is a major entry point and provides direct flights from Kathmandu to Phaplu and Phaplu to Lukla. Mayor Sherpa emphasized that a refueling facility would strengthen Phaplu's standing as a significant aviation traffic hub.

The lower Solukhumbu region's tourism has suffered due to the lack of regular flights from Phaplu. Due to flight irregularities, local travelers also have challenges when traveling by air, such as emergency evacuations.

Chief Administrative Officer Tukti Sherpa said that the refueling station at Phaplu is wonderful news for tourism marketing with the additional benefit of more tourists coming into the country with regularly available flight schedules. He further claimed that residents would find the traveling less hectic and, in a more efficient sense, easier with more efficient flights.

The Municipality of Solududhkunda aims to promote tourism and develop businesses by improving connectivity by air so that travel be made more convenient, reliable, and affordable to visitors and lower Solu localities.
